Summary

The Senior Accountant will serve as a key member of the accounting team and assist in making informed business decisions regarding the continuous improvement of strategy, business performance and profitability.

Specifically, the Senior Accountant will assist with ensuring proper accounting processes and internal controls of the Company.  This will include functional responsibility for Accounting and Control, Compliance, Tax, Financial Planning and Analysis, External Audit, and Internal and External Reporting.  The Senior Accountant will support the Controller on training managers on financial analysis, GAAP compliance, and hiring and retaining a strong accounting staff.

Functional Responsibilities

Responsible for general accounting support including preparing journal entries, account and bank reconciliations and supporting account schedules.  Support Controller with month end and year-end closing and annual audit, maintenance of adequate accounting records and a comprehensive set of internal controls.
Assist organization by identifying ways to improve accounting and finance processes. 

·         Management

·         Assist in managing the month end closing process including subledgers (AR, AP, Inventory, etc.)

·         Build a working relationship with plant and district managers to develop strong communication in regards to their financial reporting

·         Earning the respect of his or her peers, subordinates, and superiors for his or her integrity, ethics, moral compass, and ability to set a standard for their leadership to follow. He or she will maintain the integrity of the finance information by establishing appropriate systems and controls.

·         Coordinate with Billing and AP as necessary to ensure accurate information captured and reported

·         Assist, participate and facilitate cross training in the various department functions (AR, AP, Fixed Assets, etc.)

·         Coordinate more complex accounting projects and initiatives with Accounting, Finance team and other departments

·         Analyze complex financial information and make recommendations

·         Reporting

·         Assist in preparing timely and accurate monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports in accordance with GAAP

·         Run required month end reports on last day of month and save reports electronically

·         Assist in preparing management month end reports (cash flow forecasting, inventory, fixed assets, headcount, etc.)

·         Sales and Use tax and Dyed Fuel tax reporting

·         Capex reporting

·         Transactions

·         Assist Controller in maintaining a consolidated monthly close calendar with all activities and entries with date completed

·         Ensure accounting entries prepared timely and are accurately entered and posted into systems

·         Maintain list of recurring and standard journal entries and ensure these are approved and posted timely

·         Coordinate with Payroll to accurately enter payroll entries and accruals

·         Maintain accurate fixed assets accounting, including tracking capital expenditure projects

·         Perform variance analysis and prepare account reconciliations

·         Support month-end and year-end processes to ensure complete in a timely manner

·         Heavily assist with yearly audits

·         Assist with cash forecasting

·         Systems

·         Assist in maintaining consistent General Ledger Chart of Accounts

·         Assist in maintaining financial statements in system

·         Develop understanding of transaction flow and how system setup impacts accounting

·         Assist in authorized system setup changes (with Controller approval)

·         Ensure periods are closed and system calendar properly maintained

·         Complete year end system processes

·         Maintains tax rates in system

·         Controls

·         Assist in maintaining monthly close calendar

·         Perform and/or oversee credit card, balance sheet, and bank account reconciliations, including investigating and resolving variances

·         Oversee all fixed asset accounting including cost analysis for purchase, inventory and valuation and depreciation schedules.

·         Performance of intercompany eliminations for multi-entity activity.

·         Ensure accurate accounting of debt, including capital leases

·         Assist in maintaining adequate controls over the accounting operations including AP and AR and master data

·         Coordinate with field personnel to ensure accurate inventory, fixed asset and capital expenditure processes and accounting

·         Assist in developing and maintaining proper document retention and destruction policies

·         Maintain organized financial records for ease of access

·         Document policies and procedures

·         Compliance

·         Work with outside professionals including CPA firm, Banks, and insurance agents including preparation of all information and schedules and primary liaison for external audit

·         Assist with complying with local, state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings (sales and use, property and income)

·         Prepare annual 1099 information

·         Assist with providing accurate information for business licenses filings

·         Other

·         Ad hoc analysis

·         Assist with physical inventory counts

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

·         Review & know Balance Sheet

·         Ensure accurate chart of accounts

·         Ensure compliance with GAAP

·         Ensure compliance with sales tax and property tax reporting

·         Provide district management with advice on the financial implications of business activities.

·         Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.

·         Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting

·         Manage and motivate accounting staff

·         Ensure credit policies and DSO practices are balanced and in place

·         Ensure capital expenditures are captured and booked correctly

·         Ensuring compliance with sales/use tax and dyed fuel tax reporting and filings

 Experience/Training/Certifications

The Senior Accountant should be a high energy, detail oriented and thoughtful leader who acts with a strong sense of urgency and who is driven for team success.  In addition, we will be aiming for the following attributes:

·         A Certified Public Accountant designation with a Bachelor’s degree is required.  A minimum of three to five years in complex accounting/finance roles (i.e. – multi-location, multi-product organizations) with a track record of success in financial roles and expanding responsibilities.

·         The Senior Accountant must have the requisite skills to understand the financial drivers of the business, ensure the accuracy of US GAAP accounting, work with external auditors, and communicate well with district managers on the financial performance of the company.

·         Experience in ensuring compliance with Sales and Use tax and dyed fuel tax as well as filing and reporting these to appropriate governmental and reporting agencies

·         PE backed experience is not necessary but is a plus.

·         Experience in a family owned business where the executive helped to retain local company knowledge and expertise while also establishing best in class financial processes is also a plus.

·         Experience with annual budget and long range financial planning processes and managing and developing monthly financial reporting and analysis is required.

·         Experience managing or working in an organization with external debt facilities including bank financing containing quarterly financial reporting and covenant compliance is a strong plus.

·         Experience in implementing a financial ERP system is a strong plus. 

·         M&A experience or experience integrating and consolidating financial systems as part of an acquisition is a plus.

·         The Senior Accountant must be able to effectively communicate, both written and verbal

·         Exceptional problem-solving capabilities and intellectual curiosity.

·         Demonstrated ability to successfully balance the achievement of short-term objectives (quarterly budget objectives, expense management, etc.) with longer-term strategic goals.
